2021 'Coldstream Vineyard' Shiraz

$65.00

Vineyard

Our four-acre Shiraz block was planted in 1997 and now that the vines are mature and deep rooted, they are remarkably vigorous, requiring a lot of work to keep them under control. The results of this work make it worth it as they deliver wonderfully concentrated fruit full of raspberry and pepper with a mineral edge. The vines are spur pruned on VSP trellis and planted in grey clay soil dotted with ironstone and mudstone pebbles. Perhaps these stones contribute to the mineral notes in our Shiraz (likely not, but it’s a nice idea).

 Winemaking

The Shiraz block was hand-picked in early March and the whole bunches were tipped into a large fermenter for whole bunch fermentation (carbonic maceration). The wine was matured in mostly seasoned 500L French oak barrels and underwent a slow, wild malolactic fermentation over the cold winter. The wine was bottled without filtration in January 2022.

Sensory Analysis

There is an attractive blue edge to the deep ruby colour, hinting at the wine’s vibrancy. Warm spices lift from the glass, cracked pepper, cardamon and cinnamon, along with pancetta and black olives. Whilst full-flavoured, the palate shows balance and elegance and is very much a nod to Northern Rhone Syrah. Flavours of roasted sesame, bay leaves and liquorice. The wine finishes with fine, cocoa powder like tannins coating the mouth.
