ROYAL MELBOURNE WINE AWARDS
WINNER – THE TREVOR MAST TROPHY FOR BEST SHIRAZ
Our four acre Shiraz block was planted in 1997 and now that the vines are mature and deep rooted, they are remarkably vigorous, requiring a lot of work to keep them under control. The results of this work make it worth it as they deliver wonderfully concentrated fruit full of raspberry and pepper with a mineral edge. The vines are spur pruned on VSP trellis and planted in grey clay soil dotted with ironstone and mudstone pebbles. Perhaps these stones contribute to the mineral notes in our Shiraz.
Our Shiraz block was hand picked in late March and the majority of the fruit was tipped into 5 tonne fermenters as whole bunches before undergoing fermentation with wild yeasts. The warm spice aromas of the ferment were intoxicating! A post-ferment maceration soaked the tannins from the skins and stalks before pressing off to barrel (mostly 500L French oak). A slow, wild malolactic fermentation over the cold winter followed and the wine was then prepared for bottling whilst still vibrant. The wine was bottled without filtration in January 2018.
Bright purple/ruby hue. The nose starts off savoury with aromas of prosciutto, pepper corn and bay leaf. With a little air, the wine comes to life to display its full plumage of boysenberry, cloves and a lick of vanilla. The palate is mouth-filling and elegant. Redskin lollies sprayed with tar and dusted in cinnamon (it’s complex). The wine is long and finishes with a gentle caress(youthful fine tannins like a million tiny marbles). This is modern Australian Shiraz, made with a nod to Northern Rhone and an eye to the Yarra Valley’s future. Delicious drinking now but certainly no rush (I would love to revisit this one in 20 years).
